Avuvis are the aboriginal forest dogs of the Gbé people of West Africa. They fall into the class of pariah dogs. The name "Avuvi" means "little dog" in the Gbé languages (Mina, Aja, Fon and Éwé) of West Africa. The type is found in and near the forests of the West African coastal belt.
What do they look like?
The Basenji standard would be a good start. Height and weight tend to average slightly more. There is more variation in tail curl and in coat length and color. But none of the variations are unseen in Basenjis and many fall well within the standard.
Are they Basenjis?
That depends on your definition of a Basenji. The Basenji is a breed recognized by several kennel clubs around the world. Its foundation is the aboriginal forest dog of Africa. Some of these foundation dogs are of West African origin.
